Dear Ulink Reader

I am bursting to tell you - we had the first Webinar organised by HP Interex about an ongoing topic: Licensing and how to be successful, compliant and save money in licensing. The feedback was very encouraging. If you could not attend but are interested in the presentation hand-outs, email me at Gerhard.Wedenig@lakoon.com.

Still going on is our 2007 Annual Advocacy Survey. Use this opportunity to respond to HP's interest in what their clients want and express how you rate HP. If you go to www.hpadvocacysurvey.org you will pick up the survey there. Please fill it in and let your colleagues and peers know about it. Convince them to participate!

As always, I look forward to your feedback. Until the next Ulink, happy reading!

  Hewlett-Packard (HP) to pump up team in India

PC maker plans to increase staffing in the country by up to 15 percent over the next year "to accommodate the market."

Hewlett-Packard plans to increase its staffing in India by 10 percent to 15 percent over the next year, the company's managing director for India said Wednesday. Hewlett-Packard, the world's biggest maker of PCs and printers, currently employs about 29,000 people in India.

"To accommodate the market and to deliver the services which (we are) signing up, we need to add resources," Balu Doraisamy told reporters, adding that HP is also expanding its operations beyond major cities in India. (By Reuters Published: June 13, 2007, 4:59 AM PDT)

World first - 30TB benchmark - TPC-H result for HP Integrity servers
Integrity leads in mission-critical, enterprise solutions that scale to support ever-growing databases and business intelligence (BI) applications. HP is the only vendor in the BI market that has been able to show our system capabilities in the 30TB scale factor, which is the largest scale factor that the Transaction Processing Council (TPC) allows for TPC-H benchmark publications.

The benchmark was performed on a Integrity Superdome with

  • 64 Dual Core Itanium,
  • 2 (Montecito) processors (128 cores) on HP-UX 11i v3,
  • Oracle 10g R2 and
  • StorageWorks arrays.
The benchmarks delivered 150,960 QphH at $46.69/QphH. Full details are publicly available at www.tpc.org.

We list some more interesting Integrity benchmark results on TPC-H below:

  • The world's fastest single-system 10TB TPC-H benchmark using HP-UX 11i v3 on a Montecito-based Superdome;
  • Over 58% faster then the previous leadership benchmark on a 144 core Sun E25K;
  • The best performance of any 10TB TPC-H benchmark published using Oracle;
  • The best price/performance of any 10TB TPC-H benchmark;
  • The world's fastest 16c 1 TB TPC-H benchmark using HP-UX 11i v2 running on a Montecito-based rx8640;
  • The world's fastest 1 TB TPC-H benchmark using Windows and SQL Server on a 64 core Montecito-based Superdome (also new today).

Is Intel really extending their roadmap for Itanium even further?
Competition between the chip vendors is really getting tough. Read more.

Legacy Technologies
LLC the leader in Security Software for the OpenVMS platform, have announced that the most powerful security product available for OpenVMS, SecurityGuard, is now available for Itanium. Security Guard augments the security that is inherent in OpenVMS. The software does not seek to replace security features built into the operating system, but rather adds security to existing areas not protected. It contains three separate security products (AUDIT, INTRUDER ALERT, and KBLOCK) that when combined make up the SecurityGuard product, the most powerful Security tool available for Itanium.

  • Audit enhances native security by providing terminal session logging, audit trail reduction, analysis, and reporting, not otherwise available on OpenVMS systems.
  • Intruder Alert provides real-time intrusion detection and response capabilities, which enable administrators to proactively manage computing environment security.
  • KBLock enhances native OpenVMS Security for VAX/Alpha and Itanium, by providing easily implemented protections to unattended active terminals. Such functionality is not otherwise available in standard OpenVMS environments.
